W&S Motorsport with two podium finishes at the dress rehearsal for the 24h race at the Nürburgring 2023
W&S Motorsport used the ADAC 24h Nürburgring Qualifiers last weekend as a dress rehearsal for the great endurance classic twice around the clock in the Green Hell. The Vöhringer Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS #186 was driven by the two NLS regulars Jürgen Vöhringer and Sébastien Carcone, reinforced by Andreas Schaflitzl, to prepare extensively for the 24h race at the Nürburgring in mid-May. The trio finished the first race on Saturday in second place in Cup3 after starting from pole position. W&S Motorsport also finished Sunday's four-hour race in second place after a close final.
The three drivers used the one-hour qualifying session on Saturday morning to familiarise themselves with the track conditions on the almost 26-kilometre combination of the Grand Prix circuit and the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. In the end, they managed to secure pole position for the two-hour race in the evening. From 7:30pm to 9:30pm, the first race of the weekend went into twilight and darkness in wet conditions. Aiming to adapt to the light conditions, Vöhringer, Schaflitzl and Carcone took turns at the wheel and crossed the finish line in second place in Cup3.
On Sunday, the Vöhringer Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS #186 qualified for third on the grid in Cup3. Andreas Schaflitzl got off to a good start and made up one position in his stint. The Luxembourg Sébastien Carcone then took hold of the steering wheel and was able to take over the class lead in the eleventh lap. About an hour before the end of the race, Jürgen Vöhringer got into the cockpit and stayed in the lead. Shortly before the last lap, rain set in on some sections of the Nordschleife and the chaser caught up. In the last lap, Vöhringer fought side by side with him and finished in second place with a gap of only 0.1 second.
The 51st ADAC TotalEnergies 24h Nürburgring will be the highlight of the endurance racing season from 18 to 21 May 2023. Hundreds of thousands of fans will once again make the pilgrimage to the Eifel or follow the toughest race in the world at home on the livestream. As in previous years, W&S Motorsport will also take up this challenge.
Quotes after the race
Patrick Wagner, Team Principal W&S Motorsport: "The focus of the event was to prepare the drivers for the 24-hour race. As the Porsche Cayman GT4 suffered slight front-end damage in the first qualifying session, the drivers then had to drive into the night without the special lighting, which of course made visibility conditions more difficult. In the end, we are very satisfied with two second places and pole position and Jürgen delivered suspense to the very end in the last lap. Thanks to the crew and the drivers for a successful dress rehearsal. We are in a very good position and ready for the big race in the Green Hell in mid-May!"
Jürgen Vöhringer, Driver #186: "Under the changing weather conditions in April, we were able to drive two good races. Sébastien and Andreas were strong at the wheel and with a little more courage from me it might have been enough to win on Sunday. Coming in second by half a car length shows how close it was on the last lap. Many thanks to W&S Motorsport for a well prepared and looked after car and to my two cockpit mates. Pole position and second place twice is a strong result and makes me confident for the 24-hour race. In less than four weeks, the Nürburgring will be calling us to the endurance classic and we will accept the challenge."
