AVIA W&S Motorsport claims another top 10 result and double podium in the NLS

The seventh round of the Nürburgring Endurance Series season was held over four hours on 8 October 2022. The team of Patrick Wagner and Daniel Schellhaas achieved seventh overall and second place in Cup2 of the Porsche Endurance Trophy Nürburgring (PETN) at the 54th ZEWOTHERM ADAC Barbarossapreis with the AVIA Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 992 #120. Also celebrating second place in the V5 class were the drivers of the #460 Porsche Cayman, while the Vöhringer Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS #961 finished eighth in Cup3. The sister car #960 had an accident in qualifying and could not start the race.

Autumn weather dominated the programme in the Eifel. Qualifying began on Saturday morning with fresh temperatures and sunshine. However, the asphalt in the Green Hell was tricky. Even in the first minutes, there were several incidents on the track and thus a fast lap was difficult to achieve. The AVIA Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS #960, shared by Marius Rauer, Sebastian Vittel and Daniel Bohr, fell victim to the same conditions. Bohr crashed in the Mutkurve, but fortunately remained unhurt.

Qualifying went much better for the AVIA Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 992 #120, which clinched pole position in Cup2. Tim Scheerbarth, Daniel Blickle and David Jahn drove a commanding race and the team reacted perfectly and with excellent pit stops to the weather changes caused by the brief onset of rain. This performance was rewarded after four hours with second place in class and seventh place in the overall field. Blickle and Scheerbarth are now in third place in the overall championship.

The crew of the production-based Porsche Cayman #460 in the V5 class also showed top performances. Finn Zulauf, who completed his second run in the NLS, Kevin Rembert as well as Niclas Wiedmann were able to lead the class from the second starting position at times and finally saw the chequered flag in second place.

The work at the wheel of the Vöhringer Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 CS #961 was shared by Jürgen Vöhringer, René Höber and Dirk Biermann and they started the four-hour race from seventh place in Cup3. Several incidents caused by faster GT3 participants threw the trio back to eleventh place. Undeterred, they regained positions and after crossing the finish line, eighth place in class was the maximum.

The Nürburgring Endurance Series season is now entering the final stretch. The eighth round will be held on Saturday 22 October 2022 with the PAGID Racing 46th DMV Münsterlandpokal. But the final countdown is not until after the first weekend in November, as the 46th NIMEX DMV 4h race was cancelled due to weather in April and was rescheduled to Saturday 5 November. W&S Motorsport will once again be chasing maximum points at both rounds.

Quotes after the race

Daniel Schellhaas, Team Principal W&S Motorsport: "Two second places and fighting for the win with both cars is a good result, but the little bit of luck was missing. Unfortunately, we lost one car already in qualifying. That's a shame, but Daniel Bohr remained unharmed, which is always the most important thing. The unexpected rain periods threw a spanner in the works of our tactics, but our team did a great job as usual. Now we are concentrating on taking victories again in the remaining two races and thus scoring important points to keep the Porsche Trophy in the team."

David Jahn, Driver #120: "In general, the day was a bit chaotic. It already started in qualifying with the many double-yellow and code-60 zones on the Nordschleife, but we still managed to finish on pole. Weather changes in the race then caused renewed tension, but the team did fantastic pit stops and I had almost two hours of driving time. It was a lot of fun again and of course we would have liked to be on top of the podium. But we can be satisfied with second place and are happy to take the points."

Dirk Biermann, Driver #961: "The race was quite exciting, but it was tough out there again, which cost us positions. In the end, we can be satisfied with eighth place and W&S Motorsport did a great job again!"

Finn Zulauf, Driver #460: "My second NLS participation was exciting again. I was privileged to drive the start and was even able to take the lead quickly and hold it for a long time. At the end I got into the Cayman again and caught up with the leader in second place. But it wasn't quite enough for the win, I would have liked to have won it for the team and my two driver colleagues. I want to do a lot more Nordschleife racing with W&S Motorsport in the future. We will see where the journey takes us."
